Jim Organ grew up in Sullivan County,
Indiana, and graduated from Sullivan High School. He graduated from Indiana University - Bloomington with a Bachelor of Science
degree in Political Science with a minor in History. Jim graduated from the Brandeis Law School at the University of Louisville
with a Juris Doctor degree. While he was there he served as a Member of the Journal of Law and Education and worked as a Law
Clerk to gain practical experience at firms such as Morgan & Pottinger and Winkler, Fifer & Ingle. After graduation
from Law School, Jim passed the Indiana Bar Examination and was admitted to practice in the State of Indiana and Federal District
Courts in 1992. Jim
came to Terre Haute and began working with longtime divorce lawyer Stephen Trueblood at the Trueblood Law Firm in 1992. During
this time, Jim developed his interest in Family Law and has been involved in all kinds of Family Law litigation over the years,
at both the trial and appellate levels. In addition to developing a Family Law practice, he became more involved in jury trials.
He attended and completed the intensive litigation workshop held by the National Institute for Trial Advocacy in 1993, addressing
Personal Injury and Criminal Defense litigation. Jim has always worked as a private criminal defense
attroney. He has also believed that legal services should be provided for for those who simply cannot hire experienced
and qualified counsel. We all have the right to a fair trial with effective and qualfied representation, and Jim knows the
importance of having someone who will stand with a person accused of a crime when it seems nobody else will. So beginning
in 1997, Jim started serving as Appointed Counsel for people who could not afford to hire their own attorney in Parke County,
Indiana. Jim has remained motivated to serve the public in this capacity, and he is now a Deputy Public Defender in
Vigo County, Indiana, where he handles serious felony cases in Superior Court Divisions One and Three. During
his time as a Criminal Defense lawyer, Jim has handled all types of criminal cases, including but not limited to, trials over
allegations of crimes such as Murder, Attempted Murder, Drug Dealing, Aggravated Battery, Robbery, Arson, Child Molesting,
Fraud, Theft, and Drunk Driving. Jim has also handled his share of the more high profile cases in the Wabash Valley. Jim
also served as a lecturer and author for Indiana Continuing Legal Education Forum, and as a Guest Instructor in Trial Advocacy
at the Indiana University School of Law. Jim served on the Parke County Drug Court Team, helping Parke County to establish
their own Drug Court. Jim is a member in good standing with the Indiana State Bar Association, and has served on the Professionalism
Committee, and the Committee for Improvements in the Judicial System. Jim has also served as an Officer with the Terre
Haute Bar Association, and he is currently the President. Jim has also been involved in community activities, including
events such as Relay for Life. He has also regularly served as a coach with for the Southwest Parke School Corporation
in elementary and junior high school.
Jim
and his wife Norma have three children, and perhaps his greatest enjoyment of all is spending time with them outdoors.
